A new article titled The VASCERN-VASCA working group diagnostic and management pathways for severe and/or rare infantile hemangiomas has been published in the VASCERN Special Issue of the European Journal of Medical Genetics. It is co-authored by members of the Vascular Anomalies Working Group (VASCA WG).
Infantile hemangiomas (IH) are benign vascular tumors that develop during childhood. They grow rapidly in the first few weeks of life before stabilizing and regressing. In rare circumstances, the size, or location of lesions might result in serious complications. The VASCA-WG produced a diagnostic and management pathway for severe and rare IHs.
This article reflects on ideas proposed by experts and patient representatives on how to address patients with severe and rare infantile hemangiomas in a practical manner, with an algorithmic presentation of the outcomes.
